Fly fishing is the angling method that use an artificial 'fly' to catch fish. The fly is cast using a fly fishing rod, reel, and specialized weighted line.

In general terms, more fly fishing is performed in freshwater than in saltwater, however the bounds of saltwater fly fishing have been greatly expanded.
Dry Flies

This style of fly fishing is conducted using a fly that will float on the surface of the water, whether it is a creek, stream, river, or lake. The fish need to strike the lure on the surface that you can hook it and reel in, so your hope that the fly seems like a bug jumping on the surface to attract the fish to hit.

Wet Flies

A wet fly is a fly that goes underwater. Most of these types of lures can also sink completely to the bottom if they're created for that style. These flies are created to be mobile below the water's surface so they can move around, and often times a wet fly fishing angler uses multiple flies at the same time to increase the chances of success.

Nymph

nymph flies represent many life such as damselflies, mayflies, stoneflies, dragonflies and caddis. At this phase of life, they grow and eat below the surface of the water. After getting ready, they're getting to the surface where a metamorphosis occurs and they become their adult state.

Nymphs are tied on heavier hooks than dry fly hooks as it's important to get these flies beneath the surface quickly. Sometimes a fly tier may add weight to the shank of the hook before attaching the nymph to get it to sink faster and deeper. It makes them fished at a various depths, depending on the spot that the fish are feeding.

Streamer

Streamers can be fished on almost all line types in a same technique as wet fly and nymph fishing; choice is determined by the type of water and depth to be fished, situations, and so on.

There are various forms of streamers, and size plus silhouette are essential to success determined by what you are currently fishing for.

Mending

Mending is a technique where by one lifts and moves the part of the line that needs re-aligning with the fly's drift, thus extending the drag free drift. The mend can be upstream or down stream depending on the currents carrying the line or fly.

Dapping

Dapping is moving a dry fly on the surface of the water with leader and line held outside the water.

The casting hurdle, however, is a large one to overcome, because if you can ’ t get your offering to the fish, you ’ re completely lost (i...

Effective fishing is determined by the use of the proper tackle
for the situation

Selecting the best fly fishing rod is a challenging task especially if you don't know the one that you really need. In the sport of fly fishing, your rod is one of your most important pieces of equipment. Fly rods come in various shapes and sizes, and which one you choose depends a lot on how you are going to be using the rod.

There are many things to consider such as where you are going to fish, what kind of fish you want to catch, the water conditions, and even your own personality. These considerations will ease your selection process and they will be explained below:

1. What kind of fish you want to catch?

It is essential to know the fish type since it will determine the kind of fishing line to use. Normally, the rod size should match the weight of the line, and vice versa.

Commonly fly lines are numbered from 1-15
For smallmouth bass, use number 6 or 7.
For steelhead and salmon, use 7-10 weight lines.
If you plan to catch a big ocean fish then you will need 11-15 weight lines.

The action of the rod will determine the line speed and the size of the line loop during casting, the faster the action the tighter the loop will be. As a guide beginners are best to use a slow to medium action rod.

use shorter rods for smaller creeks and streams, longer rods for bigger rivers, lakes and saltwater use.

Bamboo fly fishing rods
- light, flexible, and they have a nice slow action.
- ideal for those who practice a more refined method of fly fishing
Graphite fly fishing rods
- strong depend on the quality.
- vary in price and design.
Fiberglass fly fishing rods
- strong, durable, and flexible.
- heavier than bamboo and graphite rods

2. Know your personality to determine the rod and line type that you need.

If you are an active fisherman who loves to zing your fly across the surface of the water, then you need a high action rod.

This type of rod is able to bend near the tip.

Meanwhile, a slow rod will bend closer to the rod butt. Beginners usually use the high action rod since it offers better accuracy.

3. Know the kind of water you want to fish in to determine the length of the rod you need.

If you want to fish in streams or creeks, then you need the shortest rod which is 6 feet long. Fishing in lakes or bays requires you to use a longer rod which is usually 16 feet long, so you can reach greater distances.

4. Consider the quality of the construction when selecting a fly fishing rod.

Higher graphite content means better quality. Professional rod makers are constantly redefining the right type and amount of graphite to produce even better rods. Modern graphite grades like Type III offers ease of use.

5. Last but not least, you should search with soul.

This might sound strange to you, but fly fishermen often talk about their rods as if they were a person. A good rod meets all the characteristics mentioned above. Take your time to search a reliable rod manufacturer that provides you with the highest quality products.
